Between orthogroups, the synthesis cost of extracellular monomers is not lower than the costs of monomers in orthogroups without extracellular proteins. On all panels where present, boxplots display the median, 25–75% interquartile range (IQR), and 1.5 * interquartile range from the hinge (whiskers). Notches are defined as 1.58 * IQR / sqrt(n). Datapoints beyond the whiskers are shown as outliers.
