Axon growth velocity is higher on stiffer substrates. As fasciculated axons are coupled to each other, the faster growing axons on the stiffer side are pulled toward the slower growing axons on the softer side, resulting in turning of an axon bundle exposed to a stiffness gradient in vitro and in vivo.
