Unfolding of cryptic binding sites. Talin, for example, which connects actin to integrins, has cryptic binding sites for vinculin. At low force regimes, vinculin cannot bind to talin, while at high forces, talin domains unfold and vinculin can bind, linking talin to more actin via vinculin, thus reinforcing traction forces.
