Classic surface templates sample the cortical surface based on the spherical surface, which was obtained by fully inflating the original anatomical surface. For these templates, the distribution of vertices is almost uniform on the spherical surface (right), but far from uniform on the anatomical surface (left), due to the geometric distortion introduced by inflation. Vertices of the same color (red/green; also in zoomed-in views) are homologous for the two surfaces.
