Graphic abstract of the model arising from this study. Colon cancer can be initiated either from stem (ISC) or differentiated cells, the latter in response to inflammatory cues. RSC reprogramming is activated in support of the regenerative response. During this process, actively dividing RSCs expand the cell targets for tumor initiation and progression, leading to an alternative route to tumorigenesis earmarked by an inflammatory phenotype.
