Information ratchets drive directional motion by differentiating the relative reaction rates for forward and backward processes dependent on the mechanical state (i.e. conformation or co-conformation in molecular terms), known as kinetic gating (for definitions of key terms used in this Review, see Table1). Directionality is achieved through the communication of information between a dynamic stochastic process and the coupled dissipative process that provides the energy input.
