Protein family counts per macroalgal genome were compared for each PFAM domain (n= 12 938 PFAMs in 38 814 comparisons,Supplemental Table 3) between macroalgae and their microalgal counterparts in each phylum using FDR-corrected batcht-tests in phyla-wide response screens. Unicellular ochrophytes had a greater diversity of PFAMs than their multicellular counterparts, correlating with the short period in which the latter had to evolve.
