The turnover rate of components within different, modular biological systems could be tuned in evolution by trade-offs and constraints. On the negative side, the metabolic costs of component production and/or degradation pushes turnover rates lower. Constraints on the compatibility of turnover with system functioning or accessibility of components to turnover can also restrict or push toward lower turnover. Successful surveillance and defenses can also lower investment. On the positive side, a series of benefits, impacted by fitness impacts and rate parameters, pushes a system toward higher turnover levels. See sections on factors restricting or promoting turnover presence and rate for delineation of factors depicted.
