Mitochondria produce cofactors and metabolites to cells and tissues, as well as releasing them as systemic signals to tune metabolism. Mitochondria are also a storage site for metals and contain high amounts of B-vitamin derivatives (folates, NAD-forms) and the redox-regulator glutathione.
