Experimentally measured friction force between a water droplet and surfaces with different coverage. The normalized friction force has a maximum at moderate (purple region) coverage when the surface is most heterogeneous. Note that although the normalized friction is very small for low coverage, the friction is not necessarily smaller than it is when the coverage is high, because the droplet width is significantly larger for low coverage.
