Chemical pathway of eumelanin production from l -tyrosine. The first step involves the hydroxylation of l -tyrosine to l -DOPA that is catalyzed by tyrosinasehere acting as a monophenol mono-oxygenase. This step is then followed by the catalysis of l -DOPA to dopaquinone, which is catalyzed by the diphenolase activity of Tyr1. The remaining steps in the pathway occur spontaneously in the presence of oxygen, leading to the generation of eumelanin.
