Detecting free radicals of eumelanin in different media including the living cell. The ND sensor with an eumelanin layer allows radical generation and sensing by a fluorescence readout. A transporter protein is also applied to facilitate studies inside living cells. The transformation of eumelanin containing quinone (Q) and hydroquinone groups (H2Q) to semiquinone radicals (SQR) results in a shortening in T1 relaxometry, which allows in situ quantification of radicals in various media including complex living environments.
