Structure-switching aptamers undergo conformational changes upon target binding, altering the negative charge density within or near the Debye length. Despite the inevitable nonspecific binding, the amplified signal of the aptamer rearrangement with associated counterions is transduced close to the sensor surface in the sensitive regime.
