Thickness-averaged topological number as a function of magnetic field Bext, respectively. The topology of ideal skyrmion and antiskyrmion strings is non-trivial but well-defined, +1 or -1 throughout the sample. In contrast, hybrid antiskyrmion strings have a non-integer average topological number which depends on the external magnetic field and other energy contributions.
