The UCSC annotation (based on the hg19 genome) of UBC shows multiple isoforms with DSSs functioning as 5'ss, 3'ss, or neither. DSSs (highlighted in the purple box) are located between the second and third amino acids upstream of each monomer coding region. The M inside the green box represents the first amino acid in the ubiquitin monomers. The red and blue boxes indicate the DSSs functioning as 5' and 3' splice sites within some but not all transcripts. The green bars represent the phastCons score, indicating conservation among 100 vertebrates. The yellow box represents the LRGG motif recognized by deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) (yellow oval)
