In the germ line of the offspring from an archaic and modern human, the two chromosomes recombine. If the descendants in subsequent generations live in modern human communities, further recombination will progressively shorten the archaic DNA segments. This results in archaic DNA segments of varying lengths spread across chromosomes in the population.
