Temperature dependence of the insulating gap. The gap was determined from the spectra in d as explained in ‘Determining the energy gap from the tunnelling spectra’ in Methods . The gap appeared around 100 K and increased with decreasing temperature. Vertical (error) bars indicate the thermal broadening energy for each data point.
