Schematic for compressed perturbation screen with single-valued phenotype. Each ‘composite’ sample (yellow) represents a random combination of perturbations (blue). The required number of samples scales sub-linearly with the number of perturbations given the following: (1) the effects of the perturbations are sparse (that is, k increases more slowly than n ), and (2) sparse inference (typically LASSO) is used to infer the effects from the composite sample phenotypes.
